My grandfather, Leon, was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1920. The eldest of four children, he grew up in a close-knit Jewish family. When the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939, their world was shattered. With the help of a sympathetic Polish family, Leon assumed a false identity and went into hiding. He lived in constant fear of discovery, moving from one safe house to another. Despite the risks, he remained determined to survive and to find a way to fight back against the Nazis.
