Lee was born in San Francisco, California, to Chinese parents. He began training in martial arts at a young age and by the time he was 18, he had won numerous kung fu tournaments. In 1959, he moved to the United States to attend college. While in college, he continued to train in martial arts and began to develop his own unique style, which he called Jeet Kune Do.
