On May 11, 1967, a devastating F5 tornado tore through Belvidere, Illinois, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Mike Doyle, a young boy at the time, witnessed the tornado's fury firsthand. In this article, Doyle shares his memories of that fateful day and the impact it had on his life.

The Day the Tornado Hit

"I was 10 years old when the tornado hit," Doyle recalls. "I was playing outside with my friends when we saw the sky start to turn green. We knew that meant trouble, so we ran inside and took cover in the basement."

"The tornado hit our house with a deafening roar. The house started to shake and the windows shattered. We were all huddled together in the basement, praying that we would survive."

"The tornado passed after a few minutes, but the damage it left behind was horrific. Our house was completely destroyed, and several of our neighbors' houses were also destroyed. It was a miracle that we all survived."

The Aftermath

"In the aftermath of the tornado, our community came together to help each other rebuild," Doyle says. "We were all in shock, but we knew that we had to work together to get our lives back on track."

"The Red Cross and other relief organizations provided us with food, clothing, and shelter. We also received a lot of support from our friends and family."

"It took a long time for Belvidere to recover from the tornado, but we eventually rebuilt our community. We learned a lot from that experience, and we are now better prepared for future disasters."

Mike Doyle's Legacy

Mike Doyle has dedicated his life to helping others. He has worked with the Red Cross to provide disaster relief to victims of hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters. He has also spoken to countless audiences about his experience with the Belvidere tornado.

"I want to share my story with others so that they can learn from it," Doyle says. "I want people to know that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope."

Doyle's story is a reminder of the importance of community and resilience. It is also a testament to the power of hope.

In 2017, Doyle was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Belvidere tornado. He is the first civilian to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor since 1945.

Mike Doyle is a true hero. His story is an inspiration to us all.
