McClintock was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1819. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 13, and he quickly rose through the ranks. In 1848, he was appointed to command the HMS Investigator, which was part of a search expedition for the Franklin expedition.

The Franklin expedition had set out from England in 1845, with the goal of finding a Northwest Passage through the Arctic. However, the expedition became trapped in the ice, and all of its members perished.

McClintock's expedition searched for the Franklin expedition for two years, but they were unable to find any trace of it. However, in 1859, McClintock's ship, the HMS Resolute, was found adrift in the Arctic by an American whaler.

The HMS Resolute had been abandoned by the Franklin expedition in 1848, and it contained a wealth of information about the expedition's fate. McClintock's discovery of the HMS Resolute finally solved the mystery of the Franklin expedition, and it helped to bring closure to the families of the lost explorers.

McClintock's discovery of the fate of the Franklin expedition was a major breakthrough in Arctic exploration. It helped to shed light on one of the greatest mysteries of the 19th century, and it inspired future generations of explorers.

McClintock continued to explore the Arctic after his discovery of the fate of the Franklin expedition. He led several more expeditions to the Arctic, and he made significant contributions to Arctic exploration and science.

McClintock died in London, England, in 1907. He is buried in Westminster Abbey, and he is remembered as one of the greatest Arctic explorers of all time.
