Early Life and Influences

Peter Weir was born in Sydney, Australia, in 1944. He developed an interest in filmmaking at a young age, and he began making short films while still in school. After graduating from high school, Weir worked as a cameraman for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. In 1971, he directed his first feature film, The Cars That Ate Paris.

Weir's early influences include the films of Alfred Hitchcock, Ingmar Bergman, and Akira Kurosawa. He was also influenced by the Australian New Wave movement, which emerged in the 1970s. The Australian New Wave films were characterized by their realism, their focus on social issues, and their use of natural locations.

Breakthrough Films

Weir's breakthrough film was Gallipoli (1981). This film tells the story of two young Australian soldiers who are sent to fight in the Gallipoli campaign during World War I. Gallipoli was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Weir as one of the leading filmmakers in Australia.

Weir followed up Gallipoli with a series of other successful films, including Witness (1985),The Year of Living Dangerously (1982),and Dead Poets Society (1989). These films further cemented Weir's reputation as a master filmmaker.
