John G. Neihardt

John G. Neihardt was born in Sharpsburg, Illinois, in 1881. He was the son of a German immigrant farmer and a schoolteacher. Neihardt grew up on the Great Plains, and he developed a lifelong love of the land and its people.

Neihardt attended the University of Nebraska, where he studied literature and journalism. After graduating, he worked as a newspaper reporter and editor in Nebraska and Missouri. In 1905, he published his first book of poetry, The Divine Enchantment.

In 1908, Neihardt met Black Elk, a Sioux holy man and medicine man. Black Elk shared his stories and teachings with Neihardt, and these stories formed the basis of Neihardt's book The Civilization of the American Indian.

Black Elk

Black Elk was born in 1863 on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He was a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe. Black Elk was a holy man and medicine man, and he was a respected leader of his people.

In 1890, Black Elk had a vision of the future of the Sioux people. He saw that the Sioux would be defeated by the white settlers, but he also saw that they would eventually regain their land and their culture.

Black Elk shared his vision with John G. Neihardt, and Neihardt included it in his book The Civilization of the American Indian. Black Elk's vision has inspired generations of Native Americans, and it continues to be a source of hope and strength for the Sioux people today.

Black Elk died in 1950 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. He is buried in the Black Hills of South Dakota, near the grave of John G. Neihardt.
