Tony Lazzeri was a legendary New York Yankees shortstop and third baseman who played during the 1920s and 1930s. He was a key member of the Yankees' Murderers' Row lineup and helped the team win five World Series championships. Early Life and Career

Anthony Michael Lazzeri was born on December 6, 1903, in San Francisco, California. He was the son of Italian immigrants, and he grew up playing baseball in the city's sandlots. Lazzeri was a natural athlete, and he quickly developed into one of the best young baseball players in the Bay Area.

In 1922, Lazzeri signed a contract with the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League. He played for the Seals for two seasons, and he quickly became one of the team's most popular players. In 1925, Lazzeri was purchased by the New York Yankees, and he made his major league debut on April 14, 1926.

Yankees Career

Lazzeri quickly became a regular in the Yankees' lineup, and he quickly established himself as one of the best hitters in the game. He was a powerful hitter with a good eye at the plate, and he was also a good fielder. Lazzeri was a key member of the Yankees' Murderers' Row lineup, which also included Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio.

Lazzeri helped the Yankees win five World Series championships during his 12 seasons with the team. He was a key member of the team's 1927 and 1928 World Series victories, and he also played a major role in the Yankees' 1932, 1936, and 1937 World Series wins.

In addition to his five World Series championships, Lazzeri also helped the Yankees win six American League pennants. He was named to the American League All-Star team seven times, and he finished his career with a batting average of .301, 193 home runs, and 1,083 RBIs.

Later Career and Legacy

Lazzeri was traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1938, and he played for the Cubs for two seasons. He then played for the Brooklyn Dodgers for two seasons, and he retired from baseball after the 1941 season.

Lazzeri was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1954. He is remembered as one of the best Yankees of all time, and he is also remembered as one of the pioneers of the game of baseball. Lazzeri was one of the first players to use a batting helmet, and he helped to make the game safer for players.

Personal Life

Lazzeri was married to Rose Marie Quinn, and the couple had two children. Lazzeri was a devout Catholic, and he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion, and he served as a coach for the American Legion baseball team in San Francisco.

Lazzeri died of a heart attack on August 11, 1946, at the age of 42. He is buried in the Holy Cross Cemetery in San Francisco.
